Please join us for the opening reception of Faux Pearls by Dutch visual artist Roderick Hietbrink at Where Where Exhibition Space.The exhibition will display recent work developed during his six-month artist in residence at the Institute for Provocation in Beijing.
The exhibition Faux Pearls consists of a series of photos, videos and a sculpture. During his residency, Hietbrink became fascinated by people’s - sometimes ambiguous - motives to cover objects. With a series of photographs, he addresses the notion of concealment by displaying staged scenarios in the public realm. Two short video works and a sculpture complement the photo series.
Roderick Hietbrink (b. 1975, the Netherlands) received his BA in 1999 from the Art Academy St. Joost in Breda and his MFA in 2002 from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam.
His audiovisual installations and photography fuse elements of architecture and the cinematic, drawing on the history of film, modernism and urban landscapes. His work frequently introduces external or foreign elements into everyday scenarios, challenging the perceptions of his audience and highlighting processes of interpretation.
His work is shown internationally in solo and group exhibitions and he has received grants from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture, the Dutch Film Fund and other institutions. His work is held in private and corporate collections in Belgium and the Netherlands. Over the past years he has taken part in residencies at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Platform Garanti in Istanbul and Artspace Visual Arts Centre in Sydney. In January 2011 he will begin his residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.
