ANOTHER WORD FOR SOLIDARITY: MAKING THEATRE WITH WORKERS
Benjamin Teare is the artistic director of New Common Theatre, a company currently developing a theatrical production devised by and featuring Chinese workers and to be staged in factories across China. In preparation for the production, Ben travelled extensively from Guangzhou to Beijing to Kashgar, talking to workers, artists, factory owners and trade union officials. In this talk at Institute for Provocation, Ben shares his journey thus far, his plans for the project moving forward, and his practice as an actor, director, teacher and activist.
Actor, director and theatre maker Benjamin Teare (UK) is currently based in Beijing where he is developing an artist residency program designed specifically for performing artists. Beginning his formation at Glyndebourne Opera House aged fifteen, he moved on to study at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, graduating in 2012. He cofounded his first company Clout Theatre – where he has stayed on as associated artist – while still a student at Lecoq. His works have toured prominent venues in both Europe and Asia, such as the Meyerhold Centre in Moscow, the Istanbul Municipal Theatre and the Beijing People’s Theatre. He is a guest teacher of movement at Beijing's Central Academy of Drama, and of creative theatre at Beijing University.
