CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: DUTCH ON STAGE

22 October - 13 December 2008, Beijing and beyond

The 2008 autumn season in Beijing promises to be significant, eventful and vibrant for the relations between the Netherlands and China. "Close Encounters - Dutch on Stage" is conceived as a rich and diverse program of activities to celebrate and showcase co-operations between Chinese and Dutch partners.

A pivotal part of the program consists of a series of top music performances from the Netherlands in the National Centre of Performing Arts in Beijing. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam, the Nieuw Ensemble and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century will consecutively bring a varied set of music performances from November 4 to November 14.

Designers and teachers from the Central Academy of Fine Arts have curated and organised an exhibition on Dutch graphic design. The aim is to display Dutch contemporary design ideas, methods, processes, the status and influence and relationship between design and surroundings of the Dutch society to designers and enthusiasts in China through a multi-dimensional approach. There is an exhibition touring to Chengdu, Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai, with attached a series of forums and workshops. This culminates in a Dutch focus on the Hong Kong Business of Design Week in December 2008.

The collaboration between Dutch choreographer Anouk Van Dijk and the Beijing Modern Dance Company, the double bill Women of the World, will be on show for the first time in Beijing in the first week of December, after an extensive tour in the Netherlands.
