Live performance + sound installations by Martijn Tellinga

On Sunday May 8, IFP will present two parallel pieces by Dutch sound artist Martijn Tellinga. The minimal works will coexist in two spaces, one live acoustic in the main courtyard behind the IFP Studio, and the other in Black Sesame Space.

during, lasting..exhibition piece' - IFP courtyard

6 hours

10 players enter the courtyard for one hour

audience comes and goes

Over the course of 6 hours, 10 musicians freely visit the IFP courtyard. They do so unannounced & uncoordinated. Following their arrival each musician plays a one hour part. With the permutation of the ensemble left to chance, the piece displays an aleatoric process of integrating of its parts. More than being a work of long duration, 'during, lasting..' is comprised of reconfigured time. Accordingly, it can take the shape of a silenced space -an environment of no or few sounds or activity-, of a compositional space enveloped by progressing tones and including a multitude of instruments, or of one of the many transitionary stages in between.

Score parts describe simple patterns of sound and silence; sustained distinguishable tones only, one by one or in pairs, repeated to form units and generally quiet. Between tones, a long or even longer rest. No intended rhythmical correlation between parts has to exist, they are to overlap freely, or not. The number of musicians present in the space at a certain moment sets the interaction between their parts, the daily assemblage of the ensemble over time the unfolding of a form.

‘songlines’ – Black Sesame Space

Songlines are invisible pathways crossing all over the Australian continent, used to navigate distances of sometimes hundreds of kilometers by means of song. While moving, songs sung in certain sequence provide bearing to the singing traveler, describing former locations of landmarks or natural phenomena.

"Aboriginal Creation myths tell of the totemic being who wandered over the continent, singing out the name of everything that crossed their path - birds, animals, plants, rocks, waterholes - and so singing the world into existence." - Bruce Chatwin

In Black Sesame Space five pairs of speaker drivers are installed opposite of each other. Each pair bridges a dimension within the space and quietly emits an electronic tone that closely corresponds to a prominent acoustical resonance. Two voices occasionally match with the tones, causing acoustic ripples and melody to trace and connect the invisibly traversing lines within the space.

Maria Antonia Company Morell - voice

Martijn Tellinga (1974, Netherlands) is an artist, composer and occasional performer. His practice renders an ongoing meditation on the rudimentary condition of the sonic arts. Employing a variety of means and drawn from a reduced formalist-seeming vocabulary, his work centers on the intuitive bending of (music) systems and the use of sound to express ideas of space, place and process. Thoroughly intertwining parameters of both aural and spatial perception, it enfolds aspects of concert, installation and performance art. It includes a wide variety of conceptual actions and chance operations, probing the emergent field between intended and accidental occurrences.

He performs and exhibits his work worldwide, lectures and works in residence. He is one of the curators for the long running series DNK-[amsterdam] and visiting professor at the Central Academy for Fine Arts in Beijing. He lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands and Beijing.
